Lyricism and bravura in Handel's arias

In the baroque universe, harmony seems a much more complex and artificial construction than that which naturally evokes the Hellenic canon of the Renaissance. In the midst of so much voluta, excess, chromaticism and extravagance, it would seem that the 17th and 18th centuries are almost solely the result of the much-vaunted theory of the affections; but it cannot be forgotten that there is an underlying logic, a calculated balance between the opposing forces that give life to the artistic work. Let us think of the permanent opposition of protagonist and antagonist roles, or the contrasting roles of men and women; let us look at the alternation of recitatives and arias, of major and minor tones.... But let us think especially of the extreme contrast between lyricism and bravura, thanks to the Metastasian genius which so paradigmatically laid the foundations of baroque opera. This is one of the keys to the balance, harmony and uniqueness of the lyric genre in the 18th century.

In this programme, which is based solely on music by Handel, the absolute paradigm of baroque music and opera of all times, we want to explore precisely the balance between these contrasting elements: lyricism and bravura; for which, in addition to having made a very careful musical selection, we present the very different voices of Sonia Prina and Juan Sancho, who nevertheless have in common their proven track record as baroque opera performers and their pyrotechnical colouratura, which they will place at the service of Handelian music.
