THE METAMORPHOSIS OF A UNIQUE SPACE

Acis and Galatea was Handel’s most popular dramatic work in his lifetime, musically regarded to be one of the best examples of English opera, following in the wake of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas and Blow's Venus & Adonis. Composed from the libretto by John Gay, based on the episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this pastoral opera is composed so that nature has a leading presence both in the course of the story and in the musical treatment of the orchestra and voices. In Peralada, this treatment will be by Baroque orchestra Vespres d'Arnadí, conducted by Fausto Nardi, and will feature the voices of Roger Padullés, Lucía Martín-Cartón, Víctor Sordo, Hugo Bolívar and Josep-Ramón Olivé. Under the stage direction of the youthful Rafael R. Villalobos, this new Peralada Festival production conveys the nature of the Carme Cloister in Peralada Castle to the staging and seeks to capture its essence and highlight the English nature of this work, regarded a national opera, in the treatment of the characters and the general aesthetic of the show. The story reduced to the love triangle between Galatea, her lover Acis, and the titanic and imposing Polyphemus takes place in an aseptic space with a bed as the sole element in the staging. Villalobos presents a timeless and highly stylised version for the Empordà début of this rising star on the Spanish opera scene.
