REDISCOVERING A COLOSSAL OPERA

Rinaldo is one of the most famous operas by Georg Friedrich Handel and the first one composed specifically for the London stage. In a year when one of the leitmotivs of the festival is the essence of the Baroque, we simply could not omit this title from the programme of a festival whose passion is voices and lyrical singing. The work, with a libretto by Giacomo Rossi, is based on the famous epic poem Gerusalemme liberata by Torquato Tasso and tells the love story between the Christian warrior Rinaldo and Almirena set during the first crusade against the Ottoman Empire. Leading the project is counter-tenor Xavier Sabata, who as well as taking on the role of Rinaldo, also directs and has created the concept of the show which comes to the festival for the first time in concert format and which will be performed in the 1711 version, which is rarely seen nowadays. This version does not include the great aria Lascia ch’io pianga, but it does contain other well-known ones together with some of Handel's most famous arias, such as Or la tromba in suon festante, Cor ingrato (which features in the festival’s promotional video performed by Xavier Sabata and Dani Espasa on harpsichord), Furie terribili and cara sposa. Other members of this extraordinary cast include Núria Rial, Juan Sancho, Hillary Summers, Mary-Ellen Nesi and Josep Ramon Olivé. Dani Espasa on harpsichord, will be conducting the Vespres d’Arnadí Baroque orchestra.
